Frequently Asked Questions

Why has the event moved from Village Hall?
For nearly 30 years, an Independence Day celebration has been held in the Village of Wheeling. Due to the constraints required for a safe fireworks display, as well as the fact that the amount of open space has decreased as the community has grown, the Village needed to find a new permanent home for the festivities. This opportunity to rebrand the celebration and partner with the City of Prospect Heights and Chicago Executive Airport represents the beginning of a new era in community events.

Who can come to this event?
Everyone is welcome. The organizers are committed to hosting a fun, safe, and orderly celebration for all attendees. Security will be provided by police officers from the Village of Wheeling and the City of Prospect Heights. Any individuals whose behavior or appearance is determined to be disruptive to public peace and safety will be removed.

Will there be a rain date in the event of inclement weather?
Our event will proceed rain or shine. There is no scheduled rain date.

Is this event really on the runway?
The stage and viewing area will be located just east of the Charlie pad (near the former location of the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant). With the exception of the period during the fireworks show, runways will remain in use by aircraft, creating a unique and exciting experience.

Are pets allowed?
No pets allowed on airport grounds, with the exception of service animals for people with disabilities.

What about tents, tables and umbrellas?
In order to preserve quality viewing opportunities for all guests, tables, tents and shade umbrellas are not allowed. No seating will be provided; however, we encourage attendees to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Rain umbrellas are allowed.

Can I bring outside food or beverages?
No outside food or beverages will be allowed on event grounds. In previous years we have encouraged residents to bring picnic meals for their families, but this year we have recruited a number of food vendors to be a part of this event. Water and soda will also be for sale separately from the food vendors. Click here to see our Eat page for more info.

Are coolers allowed?
Coolers are not allowed.

Are outside vendors allowed?
No. The only permitted vendors are those food trucks that have registered ahead of time. No glow or flash accessories, i.e. glow sticks, will be permitted to be sold.

Are there any planned children’s activities?
There will be two face painters and two balloon twisters, as well as a kiddie train for our young attendees.

Is handicapped parking available?
Parking is available for people with disabilities. Click here to view our Park page for more info.

Is there an entrance fee?
The “Rock The Runway” music and fireworks are free of charge.
